The man who shot Charles Kinsey

Posted onApril 13, 2017February 7, 2019 By David Perry

We’re not used to even this first step towards accountability happening. But Officer Jonathan Aledda was arrested and charged with … Continue ReadingThe man who shot Charles Kinsey

Content Notes: Abuse of an Autistic Individual On Monday, a police officer shot Charles Kinsey, a black therapist who was trying to help his client – a young Latino man named Arnaldo Rios – not get shot. Rios had walked away from his group home and someone called 911, claiming that a man was suicidal … Continue ReadingThe Abuse of Arnaldo Rios – #CharlesKinsey Shooting

911 Call and Charles Kinsey

Posted onJuly 22, 2016February 7, 2019 By David Perry

I have a new piece up at CNN on the shooting of Charles Kinsey, protected a Latino autistic man named Arnaldo Rios [Edit: See below for correction information] and the intersections of racism, ableism, and the #CultOfCompliance. Kinsey later told reporters, “I was really more worried about him than myself. I was thinking as long … Continue Reading911 Call and Charles Kinsey

Sigh. No. Vaccine passports are nothing like yellow stars and the analogy doesn't make any sense! But it does make it harder to talk about vaccine passports. It's complicated.

My latest. "In December, the historian Monica Green published a landmark article, The Four Black Deaths, in the American Historical Review, that rewrites our narrative of this brutal and transformative pandemic. In it, she identifies a “big bang” that created four distinct genetic lineages that spread separately throughout the world and finds concrete evidence that the plague was already spreading from China to central Asia in the 1200s. This discovery pushes the origins of the Black Death back by over a hundred years, meaning that the first wave of the plague was not a decades-long explosion of horror, but a disease that crept across the continents for over a hundred years until it reached a crisis point."

Some of my thoughts on gun violence after the seventh mass shooting in seven days.

- Republicans cannot be shamed or horrified into helping.
- But we can just treat guns like tools.
