I have this theory that representation matters. I wrote about my ideas here back in November, and will have a piece about gender and language coming out next week.
So I like what New York City is doing with these new “handicapped” symbols.
It’s a small thing, but many small things add up.
Representation DOES matter! And the new symbol is awesome – go NYC!
I am not persuaded. Does this symbol mean that the facility it marks is NOT for people who use wheelchairs and cannot use their arms? NOT for people who use electric wheelchairs? How do those people feel about it?
That's a fair point, but since there is no symbol that will represent ALL forms of wheelchairs, why not go for one that's more positive?
What next are they going to change the rest room logo's for women. They show a skirt. Do they want them in pants or capris
How about they use the word, "Women." In general, I do not publish the comments from anonymous cowards, but sometimes it's good to point at ignorance so we can all recognize it.
